In a few hours, the calendar will flip from 2018 to 2019. And on this more-or-less arbitrary date, we celebrate and remember what was in the past year and look ahead to what could be in the next 365 days.
I’ve noticed that I haven’t really posted in a while, so on this arbitrary occasion, I thought I’d post a brief update about what’s going on with me headed into the new year.
Started a new job
The biggest change for in 2019 came back in November when I started a new job as a web developer at the UNT Health Science Center. Needless to say, it’s been quite an adjustment the past month or so going from a stay-at-home freelancer gig to more of a “real” day job.
But so far it’s been a lot of fun. It really says something when the hands-down worst part of the job is the commute, and really that hasn’t been too bad.
It’s a great team of four web developers and two web content folks that are helping the university, its faculty and staff have a better and richer online experience. And we have a lot of fun, which great too. I’m really excited to see where this all goes in 2019.
What this means for my small business freelancing
Of course with all good things there must be at least somewhat of a negative. And the one small downside is that I won’t be able to do as much helping small businesses build their websites. I will still have time, but it won’t be as much as it might have been otherwise.
Still, I want to help anyone with a small business that needs a new website. I love being able to help others out, especially when it comes to the web. Living right next to downtown Mansfield, I have a great appreciation for small businesses. If you’re looking for a website for your small business, I still would love to help your business grow online.
What this means for my WordPress development
The new job also kind of hampers what I can do with my WordPress development — the themes and plugins in the directories, Sports Bench and a new premium theme. But I don’t think it
Even before I took the new job, most of the development on these items took place in the evening, which is basically staying the same as before. Now, if I end up taking on some small business freelance gigs, then this development might slow down. But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves.
So the plan for now is to keep working on these things, making sure they’re compatible with Gutenberg and WordPress 5.x down the line and generally making sure they’re the best they can be.
So that’s where I am heading into 2019. Things have changed, but they’ve changed for the better for the most part. I’m really excited to see what I’m writing about here this time next year.
